Cultivating mushrooms on logs is a long term investment that pays off over the course of many years. Though not commonly practiced by commercial growers in the United States, this method of mushroom production is perfect for hobbyists, backyard cultivators, and anyone new to growing mushrooms. In this workshop, we will inoculate oak logs with shiitake spawn from Wisconsin’s own Field and Forest Products, as well as discussing the life cycle of shiitake and other species that can be cultivated on logs. Each participant will leave with knowledge to begin their own backyard mushroom cultivation, as well as taking home their own shiitake log!
Fee: $37.50 (includes tax). Space is limited.
Please dress appropriately (including footware) for the weather and for working outdoors. Gardening or work gloves are suggested.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Zach is a lifelong Madisonian dedicated to strengthening community health and local food systems. Zach's mycophilia began with a love of foraging and has grown into a passion for the healing power of fungi, both for our bodies and the environments we inhabit. Zach is a former worker/member at the Community Pharmacy Cooperative where they focused on medicinal mushroom products and is also an experienced grower of gourmet mushrooms for the Madison area.
